COURSE CONTENT

Outcomes and Objectives:
At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

1.  Compose essays in Italian on topics of general interest over a wide range
    of personal and societal issues.
2.  Converse and speak extemporaneously on a wide range of topics
    with few errors of grammar.
3.  Comprehend Italian spoken naturally on a variety of cultural topics.
4.  Summarize, analyze and interpret most Italian-language short fiction and
       non-fiction orally and in writing without a dictionary.
5.  Formulate utterances in Italian that include appropriate pronouns, prepositions
     and conjunctions as well as the correct usage of a broad range of regular and
     irregular verbs in all tenses and moods, including concordance and contrary
     to fact expressions.
6.  Employ with relative ease a variety of synonyms and antonyms
     for many common verbs, adjectives, and nouns, as well as a range of
     expressions using negations and quantities.
7.  Produce original interpretations of texts both orally and in writing.

          past tenses (including imperfect and remote past), future,
          future perfect, conditional, pluperfect, conditional perfect,
          subjunctive, past subjunctive, progressive, infinitive]
     b.  Conjunctions and prepositions associated with assigned
          tenses and moods
4.  Italian poems and songs
     a.  Interpretation for content and form
     b.  Correct recitation
     c.  Analysis of cultural content
5.  Italian spoken at a natural speed by native speakers
6.  Global issues of the Italian-speaking world
7.  Critical thinking skills
     a.  Simple argumentation in Italian

Assignments:

1.  Read and study lessons from the textbook/ textbook website (averaging 15 pages per week).
2.  Reading short fiction and articles of cultural interest in Italian (averaging 7 pages per week).
3.  Memorizing vocabulary and verb conjugations (averaging 75 words per week).
4.  Written exercises in textbook/ textbook website (averaging 10 exercises per week).
5.  Complete online exercises and/or videos for verb conjugation and listening/speaking practice, etc. (averaging 1 hour  per week).
6.  Quizzes and/or tests, including final exam that covers reading, writing and speaking in Italian.
7.  Reading responses (15 minutes per week).
8.  Essays in Italian (300-500 words per week).
9.  Active participation in classroom discussions and activities in Italian.
10. Individual and/or group cultural projects may be assigned.
