COURSE CONTENT

Student Learning Outcomes:
At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

1.  Locate sources for and identify a variety of cut flowers, foliages, green, and blooming plants.

2.  Demonstrate proper care and handling methods for flowers, foliages, green and blooming plants.

3.  Create a table top garden using a variety of small plants including succulents, green and blooming plants.

 

Objectives:

Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:

1. Classify and identify species and types of flowers, foliages, and green and blooming plants commonly used by retail florists based on the binomial method of plant nomenclature.

2. Determine proper care and handling methods for flowers from the grower to the retail shop.

3. Evaluate species and types of flowers, foliages and green and blooming plants for their expression of principles and rules of design and color.

4. Identify sources of quality flower, foliage, and plant products.

5. Describe the proper and safe use of tools and equipment for processing cut flowers and crafting designs.

6. Identify floral products that are appropriate to use in dried floral arrangement.

7. Create a tabletop garden.

8. Determine the specific products used to enhance the vase life of cut flowers and foliages.

Assignments:

Assignments may include:

1. Complete worksheets on plant/floral identification and proper processing, care and handling.

2. Compile a notebook of plant/floral identification and proper processing, care and handling information.

3. Written report, 1-2 pages, on selection, process of dried material.

4. Design and create a table top garden.

5. Quizzes (1-2) and final exam.

6. Reading, approximately 10 - 20 pages per week.

7. Evaluate different products and their effectiveness for long vase life with a written report, 1-2 pages

Writing: Assessment tools that demonstrate writing skill and/or require students to select, organize and explain ideas in writing.		Writing 15 - 25%
Notebook, reports on dried material and vase life.
Problem solving: Assessment tools, other than exams, that demonstrate competence in computational or non-computational problem solving skills.		Problem Solving 20 - 30%
