This is the first in a series of theory courses which prepares students to practice vocational nursing. Orem's Self-Care Deficit Theory is used as a framework to study the bio-psycho-social-cultural-spiritual health/nursing concepts related to: nursing fundamentals, adult medical-surgical and gerontological nursing. Topics of patient teaching incorporate: basic pharmacology, medication administration, nutrition, standard nursing and medical care, for a variety of common disease states. This course compares and contrasts nursing care systems employed in health maintenance, communicable disease, acute illness, chronic illness, and rehabilitation.  This course integrates the concepts of: critical thinking, nursing process, culturally congruent care, verbal and written communication, mental health, ethics and unethical conduct, and end of life care. Standards of nursing care are also a focus to meet the needs of the growing gerontological clientele.

Outcomes and Objectives:
At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:
1.   Describe professional values and the importance of commitment to them.
2.   Identify ways in which bio-psycho-socio-cultural-spiritual needs of clients are respected.
3.   Communicate therapeutically in simulated clinical encounters.
4.   Demonstrate knowledge needed for compliance with laws and institutional policies, including a simulated  documentation of nursing care.
5.   Apply principles of infection control in hypothetical clinical scenarios.
6.   Apply principles of basic pharmacology and medication safety to various hypothetical client care scenarios.
7.   Calculate medication dosages accurately.
8.   Discuss client scenarios within the framework of the Orem's Theory.
9.   Create nursing care plans using nursing process for simulated cases.
10. Identify deviations from normal for common clinical parameters.
11. Describe and assess normal anatomical and physiological function, health maintenance, various nutritional needs and standard nursing/medical care and pharmacologic therapies as they relate to common alterations in anatomical/physiological, physical/psychological function.
12. Compare and contrast care of clients in acute versus rehabilitation settings.
13. Describe common diseases occurring in gerontological clients.
14. Develop concepts and rationales for basic vocational nursing care.
15. Compare and contrast basic mental health care concepts as they relate to communication, aging, and substance use.

     b) Neurological functioning -- ALOC (Altered Level of Consciousness), stroke, head injury, neurosurgery, and Alzheimers

     d) Carbohydrate metabolism -- Diabetes Mellitus
     e) Respiratory function -- acute distress and chronic airflow failure
     f)  Cardio vascular function - hypertension, CAD (Coronary Artery Disease), and heart failure
     g) Urinary elimination -- infection, retention, incontinence
     h) Sensory perception -- inflammation/infections of eye and ear, glaucoma cataracts, and eye/ear surgeries
     i)  Gastrointestinal /nutritional needs of client, common problems, and common drug therapy
     j)  Blood and Lymphatics -- common problems, labs, and basic anticoagulants
     k) Cancer -- basic features and medical/nursing care
     l)  Immunity -- basic principles of immune system
