Outcomes and Objectives:
At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

1. Read and comprehend health and medical-related articles and essays.

2. Summarize reading selections.

3. Use critical thinking and inference to discuss implications of a topic to the medical and health community and patients.

4. Demonstrate use of advanced grammar structures to generate questions for information gathering and make statements for explaining procedures to health care professionals and patients.

5. Write on a given topic using appropriate grammar structures.

6. Use contextual clues to determine meaning of vocabulary words.

7. Utilize affixes and roots to determine meaning of medical terminology.

8. Demonstrate appropriate oral communication skills in health care settings.

A. Reading Skills

 1. Pre-reading skills to survey and predict content

 2. Main ideas and supporting details

 3. Organizational patterns, rhetorical forms, outlining

  4. Inferencing skills

 5. Summarizing and paraphrasing

B. Grammar and Writing Skills

  1. Yes/no and WH-questions (Who, What, When, Where, Why and How)

 2. Compound and complex sentences

 3. Verb tense review

 4. Advanced grammar structure review (adjective clause, passive voice, noun clause, modal, imperative)

 5. Paragraph writing for summaries, personal responses, and case studies

C. Oral Skills

 1. Pronunciation related to medical terminology

 2. Appropriate use of language

 3. Sensitivity to audience in health care settings, including appropriate register

D. Medical Terminology and Vocabulary

 1. Frequently occurring health care vocabulary words

Assignments:

The following represent the types of assignments that may be included:

1.  Identification of main ideas in a reading

2.  Comprehension exercises from readings

3.  Summary of a reading in writing or in small group presentation

4.  Development of written and oral personal responses to medical scenarios

5.  Compilation of a case study

6.  Development of an outline of the structure of a reading

7.  Development of questions to ask a professional in a chosen health field

8.  Work-related role-playing

9.  Partner work and small group activities

10. Written vocabulary exercises with use of a medical dictionary

11. Vocabulary skill building using affixes, word root, and suffix knowledge

12. Matching vocabulary with anatomy pictures and diagrams

13. Practice of pronunciation, including stress, intonation, and rhythm patterns

14. Research and oral presentation on a given topic

15. 3-6 objective exams, 4-10 quizzes, and final exam
