At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. Identify appropriate terms and concepts used in the study of Native North American cultures.
2. Integrate data from archaeology, physical anthropology, linguistics, and Native North American oral history to explain the origin of Native North Americans.
3. Locate on a map and describe the Native North American culture areas, as well as the traditional territories of various Native groups.
4. Compare and contrast socio-political systems, kinship structure, gender relations, technology, subsistence patterns, arts, and ritual among various Native North American groups.
5. Reconstruct the time-line of European colonization.
6. Analyze the cultural transformations that occurred within Native societies as a result of colonization.

1. Students will read approximately 10-25 pages weekly in required textbooks.
2. Students will complete 2 to 3 exams and a final. Exams must include a written essay component and/or multiple choice questions, true/false, completion, map identification, and short answer.
3. Students will complete 2 or 3 written assignments in the SRJC Museum or similar venues, using the exhibits of Native American cultures. A minimum of 4.38 hours per semester will be required.
4. Optional assignments may include:
a. One or more 1-3 page papers on assigned topics, including book and article response papers and critical-thought essays
b. Map quizzes
c. In-class participation projects
