This course will introduce and identify shrubs, vines, and groundcovers that are not often used in Sonoma County, but are well suited for sustainable landscape use in our climatic zones. It will stress plant identification, environmental requirements, and landscape usage and potential.  Plants that are compatible with sustainable landscape practices will be highlighted, including low water-use and reduced needs for pest management and specialty fertilizer application.

Outcomes and Objectives:
At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
1. Identify a range of shrubs, vines, and groundcovers by leaf, branch and bark shapes, and structure.
2. Describe the growth habits and soil and water requirements of different shrubs, vines, and groundcovers.
3. Assess and select shrubs, vines, and groundcovers according to desired function, growth habits, climate, exposure, and maintenance requirements.
4. Assess and recommend sustainable cultural practices for shrubs, vines, and groundcovers in the landscape.
5. Assess and recommend shrubs, vines, and groundcovers for landscaping purposes to provide desired foliage, flower, and form characteristics.
6. Evaluate and recommend shrubs, vines, and groundcovers suitable for water efficient landscapes.
7. Use plant keys or other resources, including internet, to identify specimens.
8. Demonstrate proper plant materials collection and preservation methods.

2. Collect and label field samples of 5-10 new plants per week.

6. Sight identify specimens of 5-10 new plants per week.
7. Write and correctly spell botanical and common names for 5-10 new plants per week.
8. Final specimen identification exam.
