This course reviews the initial admission requirements for alcohol and drug assistance programs, assessment requirements for orientation to the programs, disciplinary rules, costs of programs, methods of payment and client's rights.  Current treatment modalities will be compared and contrasted with regard to the individual in the social and clinical context. Professional and ethical codes of conduct and behavior will also be reviewed and emphasized.

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. Recognize and explain the strategies and treatment modalities needed based on
     a client's stage of dependency, changes in counseling, and / or stage recovery.
2. Distinguish between reformative strategies and transformative
    strategies in self and others.
3. Apply reforming and/or transforming approaches to working with others.
4. Differentiate between and among existing major treatment modalities.
5. Utilize assessment instruments in an ongoing manner throughout the client's
    treatment process.
6. Develop and maintain relations with other community resources and arrange
    client referrals to other interdisciplinary agencies, community programs,
   and other appropriate resources.

Reading Assignments:
Students will be required to read and study the assigned chapters in the
textbook and other selected reading in journals and hand-outs.  30-40 pages per week.
 
Writing Assignments:
1. One to three 5-page term papers giving examples of transformative thinking as it relates
   to substance abuse rehabilitation and dependency disorders.
2. One to three 5-page term papers describing multidimensional assessment instruments
    covering current substance abuse education and environmental constraints.
 
Exams:
Students will be given a midterm and final exam, and two short exams.  Mid-term and Final will include essay questions.
