Students will learn the principles of public health programming through classroom and field experience. Students will participate in presentations in the field and in a community service learning experience.

Outcomes and Objectives:
At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:
1. Discuss the role of the dental hygienist in the public health system.
2. Describe the major oral health problems and the extent to which they affect the population.
3. Identify social, cultural, economic, and political factors influencing oral health problems.
4. Describe preventive measures that can be used in a community to reduce or control the major oral health problems.
5. Discuss ways in which members of a community currently receive oral health care and other health services, including privately and publicly funded services.
6. Discuss future trends in the delivery of health care and manpower utilization as they relate to meeting community oral health needs and demands.
7. Assess, by means of indices, surveys, questionnaires, interviews and other means, the oral health needs of a target group; i.e., the oral health status knowledge and attitudes towards oral health and oral treatment needs.
8. Prepare a program, which describes the target group and includes results and interpretations of a survey needs assessment.
9.Prepare a final report summarizing a community service learning experience in measurable terms.
10 Compare and contrast dental public health and private practice.
11 Explain the dental hygiene process of care used in a community setting.
12. Discuss epidemiology and how it relates to dental caries and periodontal disease, including agent, host and environmental factors.
13. Utilizing epidemiology, in conjunction with the statistical and research methods, compare specific defined populations.
14. Explain the demand for utilization of and barriers to dental services for different population groups.
15. Identify the various methods of financing dental care.
16. Discuss the impact of the fluoridation issue on society.
17. Evaluate and analyze dental literature.
18. Create a strategy and lesson plan for field visits to specific groups in the community.
19. Develop and implement a Community Service Learning activity.
