Catalog Description:

A seminar and clinical course designed to continue to expand and develop dental hygiene skills in preventive and maintenance therapy. Students will become proficient in scaling and root planning procedures, pain control, and gingival curettage.

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

A. Continue Case Study Preparations and Presentations

1. Apply information gathered from the medical history and assessments, including a dietary analysis, to establish dental hygiene treatment and care plans.

2. Develop a treatment and care plan.

3. Develop procedures associated with evaluation of outcome assessments following implementation of dental hygiene care.

4. Prepare a visual, written, and oral presentation of a selected case.

B. Gingival Curettage

1. Explain the rationale/justification for gingival curettage in periodontal therapy.

2. Describe the controversy and current attitude surrounding the effectiveness of purposeful curettage.

3. Discuss effective treatment planning for gingival curettage procedures based on individual patient

       conditions.

4. Describe the procedures for performing gingival curettage.

C. State Board Examination

1. Describe the appropriate patient type for the California State Board Examination.

2. List the instruments that are required by the Examiners.

3. Describe the assessments and their presentation format required by the State.

4. Explain the examination procedure.

D. Ergonomics/Cumulative Trauma Disorders - Review and expand from DE 51

1. Define occupational hazard and list the five main hazards for dental practitioners.

2. Define ergonomics and explain how this science relates to dental practitioners.

3. Compare the similarities and differences between the causes, areas affected, symptoms and treatment of nerve impairment CTD (cumulative trauma disorders) or RSI (repetitive stress injuries) and connective tissue compression.

4. Evaluate the implications for OSHA's proposed Ergonomic Standards.
