COURSE CONTENT

Outcomes and Objectives:
At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:
1. Identify themes and concerns of the writers studied,
2. Recognize common characteristics of the body of literature,
3. Articulate the political, social, and cultural issues present in the
literature.
4. Interpret and analyze the effects of the literary techniques used in
the works,
5. Identify the diversity of experience embodied in the literature,
6. Compose coherent written analyses of chosen works,
7. Evaluate the merit, effectiveness, and significance of each work.
8. Identify major theoretical issues underlying the literature which are
relevant to understanding race, ethnicity, gender, and class in the U.S.
9. Examine the issues of class, sexual orientation, age, religions,
disability, and/or Deaf culture particular to the Asian American
experience and in comparison to other American Cultural groups.

Topics and Scope

Through close readings and discussions of major twentieth century
literature by Asian Americans, this course will cover:
üThe unique characteristics, both literary and thematic, in individual
works,
üThe historical background of the Asian American experience (from
immigrant to fifth generation) relevant to each work,
üCritical theory relating to Asian American literature,
üCommon characteristics, themes, concerns, and issues treated in Asian
American literature.
üComparisons with other American cultural/ethnic groups.

Assignments:

Students will be assigned up to 50 pages of reading per class session and
will prepare for quizzes and exams by means of class discussion, group
work, research projects, and visits to museums, cultural sites or events,
and literary lectures or readings. Students will be asked to ole play and
participate in other class demonstrations. Students will be required to do
close literary analysis of selected works.
