Catalog Description:

Certification program that is designed to reward dog owners for their dog's good manners at home and in the community. This is a two-part program that stresses responsible pet ownership for owners and basic good manners for dogs. All dogs who pass the CGC test will receive a certificate from the American Kennel Club. Program advocates owner education and participation in responsible dog training and ownership, thus positively impacting our community.

COURSE CONTENT

Outcomes and Objectives:
At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

The student will:

1.   Apply program criteria as a means to advocate responsible dog

    ownership.

2.   List the benefits of well trained dogs in today's community.

3.   Identify the ten tests a dog must successfully pass to receive the

    Canine Good Citizen Certificate as established by the American Kennel

    Club.

4.   List some of the agencies which use CGC for dealing with dog problems

    in communities.

5.   Demonstrate ability to implement proper training techniques

    culminating in passing of all ten tests required for certification.

6.   Use canine certification as a positive impact on community groups.

Topics and Scope

1.  Define Canine Good Citizen Program criteria.

2.  Responsible dog ownership through identification.

3.  Benefits to the community because of responsible ownership.

4.  American Kennel Club's role as founder/developer of the CGC Program.

5.  Ten tests to be successfully passed for certification.

6.  Training for and passing individual tests.

Assignments:

1.  Read industry handouts.

2.  Train their individual dogs in accordance with certification

   requirements.

3.  Research organizations and groups in community which may

   benefit from contact with program graduates.
