This course is designed to give an overview of the role of Community Health Outreach Workers and the philosophy of Community Health Work. It will look at how CHWs have contributed to health care in the United States and the world. Discussions with local community health workers and other health professionals, a field trip to a community agency, and 4 hours of shadowing a CHW will be included.

At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

1.  Describe history, roles, characteristics and responsibilities of
   community health workers.
2.  List the reasons why respect for diversity and two-way learning
   between the community and the outreach worker are at the heart of
   community health work.
3.  Identify individual abilities, attitudes, beliefs and values that are
   important for CHWs.
4.  Identify four key leadership characteristics for CHWs.
5.  Examine the community health network of cooperation and support that
   is essential for successful community health work.
6.  Locate five under-served populations in Sonoma County.
7.  Compare & contrast five active Sonoma County community health
   organizations and their purposes.
8.  Name six titles common to CHWs.
9.  Analyze eight myths and facts about homelessness.
10. Discuss the health crisis in the United States.
11. Contrast primary and preventive health care.
12. Describe two ways CHWs have contributed to the delivery of primary
   and preventive health care in the United States.
13. Explain the importance of identification of community resources for
   CHWs.
14. Decide if community health work is right for you, describing skills

Assignments:

1.   Selected readings (10-20 pages) each week.  Students will use
    "Google" search engine on the Internet to find, examine and compare
    articles with different perspectives on the history of CHWs and tasks
    CHWs perform.  They will critique, analyze, and write responses
    Regarding the articles on the US health crisis and on homelessness.
2.   Four-hour shadowing and volunteer experience with Sonoma County
    community health workers.  Students will write a 3-page paper to:
    a) describe the agency - what it provides, who it serves, & why it
    exists.
    b) describe the community - What seems to be the biggest need in the
    community? What are the living conditions? List some strengths of the
    community?
    c) describe the shadowing and volunteer experience and how it
    affected you
3.   Make and study 20 medical terminology flash cards and play a game
    with them in class the next week.
4.   In a short paragraph, respond to a community health worker scenario
    in the syllabus to demonstrate critical-thinking & problem-solving
    techniques used in CHW classes.
5.   Write a community field trip reaction paper.
