This course is designed to instruct the student in hands-on application of hand-lettering to include a varied look at the structure of letters from the Roman and Italic calligraphy.  Pen and brush innovative techniques are emphasized as they apply to color and paper choices.

Description:

The basic course provides hands-on instruction in the history, analysis, and production of classic and contemporary letterforms.  The student will learn the basics of hand-lettering and calligraphy, inks, paper choices for successful and innovative application.

COURSE CONTENT

Outcomes and Objectives:
At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

Upon successful completion of this course the student will be able to:

1.  Investigate historical lettering as it applies to contemporary digital

   applications.

2.  Produce hand-lettered typography using traditional calligraphy methods

   and pointed brush and ink.

3.  Evaluate the successful applications of pen and brush with ink.

4.  Form letters that exhibit a working relationship between successful

   and inaccurate ligatures, joins, and flow of typographical

   relationships.

5.  Create hand-lettered images with commercial application.

6.  Describe the use of color as it applies to relevance and permanence of

   calligraphic applications.

7.  Select paper appropriate for hand-lettering projects.

Topics and Scope

1.  Structure of hand-rendered letterforms.

2.  Historical lettering and its application to contemporary, digital

   processes.

3.  Materials relevant to hand lettering type.

4.  Working relationship between successful and inaccurate

   ligatures, joins and flow of typographical relationships to the

   building of letters.

5.  Techniques of hand-drawn, built-up letterforms.

6.  Hand-lettered images with a commercial application.

7.  Ink/paint and paper application.

Assignments:

1.  Analysis by example of traditional type forms for relevance to

classical and contemporary application.

2.  Creation of a grid for using the 45 degree angle necessary to execute

hand-lettering.

3.  Practice of the pen, pen holder, ink, and angle relevant to classic

Roman letterforms.

4.  Hand build classic letterforms.

5.  Practice joins and ligatures to create a flow of letterforms and

letter-spacing.

6.  Improvise the classic to the contemporary by combining both in a five-

word sentence.

7.  Create a type-only logo using the hand-lettering techniques applied

to classic calligraphy.

8.  Create a type-only logo using the hand-lettering techniques applied

to contemporary calligraphy.

9.  Practice of pointed brush and ink to create hand-lettered forms.

10. Produce one word using hand-lettering with pointed brush and ink.

11. Produce three words combining hand-lettering by pointed brush and ink

technique with traditional calligraphy pen and ink.

12. Produce a seven word sentence combining pen and brush in three

gradated colors on appropriate paper.

Exams:

1.  Spontaneous application of brush with pen lettering in color with

appropriate paper.

This is a degree applicable course but assessment tools based on writing are not included because problem solving assessments and skill demonstrations are more appropriate for this course.
