COURSE CONTENT
Outcomes and Objectives:
At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:
1. Perform a variety of fundamental clinical medical assisting skills
within medical assisting professional and ethical scope of practice.
2. Apply principles which have been learned in the corequisite theory and
skills courses.
3. Utilize problem-solving and creative ability involving proper and safe
use of equipment, procedures and processes utilized by the clinical
medical assistant in a physician's office, a health clinic, and/or
outpatient clinic.
4. Plan and implement care in a safe, timely, and organized manner.
5. Correctly prepare medication from an ampule, a vial, and multiple
medication prep in one syringe in a clinical setting.
6. Properly administer a variety of injections, e.g., intramuscular,
subcutaneous, and intradermal, in a clinical setting.
7. Properly dispose of needles/syringes in a clinical setting according to
OSHA guidelines.
8. Demonstrate critical thinking regarding professional concept of
confidentiality and ethical and legal implications of working in a
clinical medical assisting setting.
9. Utilize problem-solving techniques to address problems encountered in a
clinical setting.
10. Communicate effectively, with cultural sensitivity, with patients,
physicians, and other medical staff members.
11. Demonstrate professionalism in a clinical setting.
12. Accurately document medical records.

I. Clinical Experience: Medical assisting clinical experience in
outpatient clinic facility with fundamental patient-care assignments.
A. Evaluation criteria
B. Students will be:
1. communicating effectively with patients, instructor, and
medical staff
2. practicing fundamental skills within professional and
ethical scope of practice for medical assistants
3. planning and implementing care in a safe, timely and
organized manner as it relates to medical asepsis, vital
signs, patient examination and history, patient teaching,
assisting the physician with office surgery and physical
exams, ambulatory aids, hot and cold therapy, aural and
ophthalmic procedures
4. preparing and administering oral and parenteral
medications in a safe manner
5. providing culturally sensitive care
6. maintaining patient privacy and confidentiality
7. documenting medical records within legal standards
8. demonstrating professional behaviors including:

clinical experience to expand skills and prevent errors

1. Receive clinical assignment and implement clinical patient care.
2. Maintain weekly journal to include goals, patient encounters, problems
experienced, remedies and solutions implemented, and personal reflections.
3. Participate in problem-solving exercises and role playing of
interpersonal conflicts and/or communication skills.
4. Participate in post-clinical conferences, with instructor and peers,
with discussion of assigned experiences and any problems encountered.
5. Complete 25 exercises demonstrating the ability to accurately perform
clinical medical assisting procedures.
6. Complete 5 to 20 written assignments (1-3 pages) from clinical setting,
related to clinical procedures and OSHA standards.
