COURSE CONTENT

Outcomes and Objectives:
At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

The aim of this course is to:
1.  Present a chronological survey of Spanish literature in English
   translation so that students having little or no knowledge of Spanish
   can appreciate Spanish literary masterpieces.
2.  Primarily focus on complete works by major Spanish authors who are
   universally known and whose writings still have considerable
   relevance to 20th century readers.
The main focus of this course will be on:
1.  Works themselves as literature, and lectures will aim at helping
   students to understand and appreciate works read.
2.  Students will be encouraged to ask questions and to share and critique
   each other's ideas in class discussions.
3.  The instructor will try to show what is specifically "Spanish" (as
   well as universal) in Spanish literature and to foster a sensitivity
   to ideas and values within a culture that is in many respects
   very different from their own.

Topics and Scope

The course will provide:
1.  An introduction to each historical period so that students can
   understand the context within which the various authors wrote.
2.  Familiarize students with the main social, political and artistic
   trends of each period, and these will be related to such questions
   as the author's motivations in writing and the content and style
   of his or her works.
3.  Significant biographical details will be provided for each author.

Assignments:

1.  There will be 3 tests (one on each of the first three chapters)
   as well as a final (cumulative, but with an emphasis on the final
   time period).
2.  The tests will contain an initial factual component (Multiple choice,
   quote identification, brief informational questions).
3.  This will test the student's knowledge of historical background,
   author's biographies, and the contents of works read.
4.  A second part will consist of several essay questions which will
   allow students to exercise their critical abilities by analyzing
   and interpreting aspects of works that have been read.
