This course is designed to develop minimal skills in basic dental chairside techniques.  Included are patient/operator positioning, cavity classifications and basic instrumentation.  Required for those students accepted into the 22-month dental assisting program.

COURSE CONTENT

Outcomes and Objectives:
At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

1.  Identify the components of the dental chair, operator & assisting
chairs
2.  Adjust the height & position of operatory & assisting chairs
3.  Position the operator and assistant chairs
4.  Position a patient in the dental chair
5.  Adjust the dental light according to quadrants
6.  Identify & explain function of various types of dental sterilizers
7.  Identify the basic dental instrumentation set-up
8.  Explain the function & operation of the ultrasonic unit
9.  Follow OSHA infection control protocol in preparing instruments for
sterilization
10. Utilize OSHA recommended personal protective equipment when handling
contaminated dental instruments and/or equipment
11. Identify the 5 classes of cavity preparations
12. Position the oral evacuator in each quadrant of the arch
