Basic concepts of maternity nursing with an emphasis on wellness. Human sexuality and normal development of the reproductive life span. Theory focuses on normal maternal child period for mother, infant and family. Preparation for labor/delivery, postpartum and newborn clinical experience is covered with a theoretical knowledge base of the phases throughout the labor, birth, postpartum and neonatal period. Complications related to labor, postpartum and newborn period are reviewed with common intervention and medical regimens applied. Special problems related to abnormal newborn care of neurologic deficits are covered to prepare for ICFDD experience. Pharmacologic interventions are integrated throughout theory including pain assessment and obstetrical analgesia and anesthesia.

Outcomes and Objectives:
At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

The student will be able to:
1. Apply prerequisite theory to maternal child specialty.
2. Correlate normal physiologic processes to abnormal signs/symptoms in
hypothetical scenarios of each stage of prenatal and perinatal periods.
3. Describe benefits of prenatal care and relate it to potential problems.
4. Articulate the stages, symptoms and common nursing interventions for
the labor/delivery process.
5. Describe potential complications of birthing by identifying nursing
interventions and diagnoses that would apply to hypothetical situations.
6. Articulate deviations from normal in the assessment of newborns.
7. Identify and articulate rationales for safety measures important to the
care of both the mother and infant.
8. Articulate common drugs, side effects and uses for the obstetric and
pediatric client.
9. Prepare teaching guides for hypothetical clinical scenarios.
(i.e . breastfeeding, bathing of infant, bulb suction, circumcision care,
care of umbilical cord, and postpartum care of a variety of situations.

1. Human sexuality as a normal phase of growth and development through the
life span.
2. S.T.D's (diagnosis and common treatments)
3. Fetal development and common teratogenic effects.
4. Prenatal period with common discomforts and interventions including
potential complications and patient teaching regarding self-care.
5. Beginning signs of labor, phases/stages of labor with common responses
and nursing interventions.
6. Role of the VN in Labor/delivery.
7. Pain assessment and Obstetrical analgesia and anesthesia.
8. Complications of labor and related medical regimens and nursing care.
9. Immediate postpartum assessment and potential complications with
nursing care and pharmacologic interventions.
10. Complications leading to cesearean section including care of the
postop mother.
11. Care of the newborn including assessment in delivery (Apgar scores) a
and normal reflexes, blood sugar, head to toe, and safety issues.
12. Complications of the newborn (requiring intensive care) with special
needs of rehab care for neuromuscular disorders.
13. Patient teaching regarding self care for postpartal period for mother
(breast and peri care, S/S infection, bleeding) and care of the newborn
(clearing airways, bulb, cord care, circ care, safety issues, positioning)
14. Documentation standards in preparation for the clinical settings.
