COURSE CONTENT

Outcomes and Objectives:
At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

1.  Evaluate patterns, fabrics, linings and interfacing and select
   compatible coordinater.
2.  Recognize tailoring techniques that are unique to menswear.
3.  Demonstrate the ability to apply these techniques to a garment.
4.  Demonstrate the ability to construct a custom tailored man's jacket
   or coat.

Topics and Scope

1.  Discuss pattern selection and appropriate fabrics for a variety of
   styles.
2.  Comparison of body measurements to the pattern to determine pattern
   alterations.
3.  Discuss value of making a muslin fitting shell.
4.  Analyze different interfacings, the suitability to pattern and fabric
   and the methods of application.
5.  Compare different linings and their characteristics.
6.  Construction techniques to be covered:
    * Applying interfacings, shoulder plates and other special
      interfacings.
    * Welt pockets with flaps.
    * Patch pockets.
    * Making shoulder pads and inserting them.
    * Back vents.
    * Order of assembly of jacket.
    * Lapels and collar and undercollar.
    * Sleeves, sleeve heads and plackets.
    * Insertion of lining.
    * Hems.
    * Buttons, shank and buttonholes.
