Emphasis is on the application of fundamental principles of nursing care for adult patients with common medical, surgical conditions. Focus is on planning and implementation of patient care in subacute and long term care settings, including medication, administration, and charting. Anatomical physiological and psychosocial concepts are applied throughout the course.

Prerequisites/Corequisites:
Admission to the Psychiatric Technician Program; high school graduation or equivalent; Computational Math Exam (minimum score: 25); eligibility for ENGL 100A or ENGL 100.


Recommended Preparation:
Previous work experience (WEOC 99) at a state hospital, psychiatric, or long term care setting.

COURSE CONTENT

Outcomes and Objectives:
At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

The students will:
1.  Demonstrate the ability to utilize effective coping skills.
2.  Behave in a professional manner reflecting identified standards
   for health care professionals.
3.  Comply with regulations regarding direct patient abuse and act as
   an advocate to insure patient needs and rights.
4.  Accurately collect data for each patient from client's clinical
   record, observation and shift report to determine client's progress.
5.  Participate with the health care team in maintaining a safe and
   hygienic environment.
6.  Develop a written, organized, daily schedule for delivery of patient
   care.
7.  Apply principles of gerontology in planning and implementing
   patient care.
8.  Implement plan of care within given time frame.
9.  Participate with team members in planning, developing, evaluating,
   revising and implementing treatment care plans for assigned patients.
10. Apply principles of human anatomy and physiology to common medical
   surgical disorders.
11. Prepare the client physically and emotionally for frequently used
   diagnostic tests by describing how each test is done.
12. Utilize appropriate positioning techniques, therapeutic handling
   techniques and active-passive range of motion.
13. Apply principles of safety in the delivery of patient care.
14. Describe therapeutic and adverse effects of drugs being administered
   to assigned patients.
15. Perform nursing skills consistent with audit sheet criteria.
16. Report abnormal assessments and make appropriate interventions.
17. Write appropriate entries on nurses notes, graphic and flow sheets
   consistent with agency policy and principles of documentation.
18. Institute emergency CPR and first aid when necessary.
19. Identify and participate in on going education for professional
   and self growth.

Assignments:

   assigned patients.
2.  Six charting notes and six care plans for assigned patient.
3.  Completion of medication cards for assigned patient.
4.  Participation in post-conference on a daily basis.
5.  Paper on physical disease or disorder with nursing care.
6.  Written daily schedule of care.
7.  Skill lab practice concurrent with clinical experience.
