At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

The student will:
1. Name stages of normal childhood mental and physical development.
2. Identify components of a behavioral plan.
3. List common disabilities encountered in therapeutic riding courses
utilizing proper medical terms.
4. Describe the physical, mental, psychological characteristics of
disabilities observed in the riding setting.
5. Create a business plan for a therapeutic riding program.
6. Design a physical plant layout for a therapeutic riding center.
7. Discuss evaluation procedures.
8. Discuss recruitment, retention and training of staff and volunteers.
9. Identify support resources; how they could be best utilized and how to
obtain those services which are available, (computer software
programs, professional agency assistance, and consultants).

1. Human growth and development as demonstrated through therapeutic
riding
2. Human behavior/psychology.
3. Medical terminology and vocabulary as it pertains to therapeutic
riding
4. Instruction in etiology/management/awareness and sensitivity
training in relation to:
a. physical impairments
b. cognitive impairments
c. sensory impairments
d. psycho-social impairments
e. speech and language impairments
5. Facilities, equipment design considerations, and safety features,
relating to students with disabilities.
6. Recruitment, management, supervision and training of staff and
volunteers.
7. Administrative considerations: legal structure, funding, marketing,
public relations, risk management, quality assurance, inclusions,
exclusions, required forms, and insurance-liability.
8. Review of specific computer programs and internet resources.
9. Inter-agency relations.
10. Evaluation and program development.
