COURSE CONTENT

Outcomes and Objectives:
At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

The students will:
1.  Recognize and review the nursing responsibilities of the various
   nursing levels in the hospital.
2.  Describe and compare specific physical changes in the aging process
   and the effects these changes may have on the nursing management
   of their care.
3.  Discuss the implications of physical and mental changes for the
   development of an individual nursing care plan.
4.  Describe legal responsibilities and obligations of nurses.
5.  Give examples of legal issues that arise in nursing practice.
6.  Define legal aspects of nurse-client, nurse-physician, and
   nurse-employer relationships.
7.  Identify factors that promote and inhibit effective communication
   in relationship to the work setting.
8.  Describe the role communication plays in the performance of
   nursing care measures.
9.  Identify the purposes of patient teaching.
10. Integrate patient teaching into nursing process.
11. Identify the nurse's role in assisting patients with problems
   related to loss, death, and grief.
12. Describe and compare the five stages of grieving in Keebler-Ross'
   theory.
13. Describe the physiological mechanisms of drug action, including
   absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion of medications.
14. List and discuss the clinical assessments associated with the four
   major types of acid-base imbalance.
15. Differentiate between health promotion and prevention of illness
   and describe the levels of prevention.
16. Describe the scope of medical-surgical nursing practice,
   independent and interdependent functions. Use of specific
   knowledge (pathophysiology, sign, & symptoms, medical therapies)
   and types of nursing interventions.

     F. Circulatory system.
     G. Respiratory system.
     H. Digestive system.
     I. Urinary system.
     J. Endocrine system.
     K. Reproductive system.
4.  Introduction to development/disabled concepts with clinical
   experience in skilled nursing units at Sonoma Developmental
   Center at Eldridge, CA.
5.  Community health nursing concepts.
6.  Vocational relationships and job applications.
7.  Leadership styles.
