Instruction in advanced arithmetic skills designed for pre-Health Science students planning to enter selected programs offered by Santa Rosa Junior College.  Prepares students for success through advanced skills development of operations with fractions, decimals and percents.  A study of the metric, household and apothecary systems and learning of the ratio/proportion, equation and formula methods of converting.  Introduces and develops advanced skills in calculating drug dosages in preparation for safe administration of medications in the health field.

Outcomes and Objectives:
At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

By the end of the course, the student will be able to:
  *  compute advanced operations
  *  demonstrate ability to convert metric, household and
     apothecary formulas
  *  use various methods to solve basic pharmacology problems
  *  calculate drug dosages for oral and parenteral administration
The students will:
  1. Develop advanced computational skills in addition, subtraction,
     multiplication and division of whole numbers, fractions and
     decimals; calculate complex word problems involving multiple
     operations.
  2. Demonstrate ability to convert metric, household and apothecary
     formulas; use various methods to solve basic pharmacology
     problems.
  3. Calculate drug dosages for oral and parenteral administration.

Topics and Scope

1.  Advanced skills development of:
   a. Operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication and
      division of whole numbers, fractions and decimals.
   b. Conversions of fractions, decimals, and percents as applied
      to Health Sciences.
2.  Solving health science problems using ratio-proportion, equations,
   formula and dimensional analysis methods.
3.  Metric, household and apothecary systems and their use in solving
   basic pharmacology problems, conversions within and between
   systems.
4.  Practice simple and complex drug dosage calculations for oral
   and parenteral administration.
