Introduction to the role of the chairside dental assistant, preparing the patient for dental treatment, positioning of the patient, operator and assistant for four-handed and six-handed dentistry.  Preparation and placement of topical anesthetic agents, placement and removal of rubber dam, oral evacuation and retraction; instrument grasps/transfers, triplex syringe usage. Identification and use of hand instruments, equipment maintenance, amalgam and composite restorative tray set-ups, and fabrication of temporary crowns and bridges.

Prerequisites/Corequisites:
Admission to the Dental Assisting Program via application process.


Recommended Preparation:
Eligibility for English 100A, 104 or 1A or equivalent

COURSE CONTENT

Outcomes and Objectives:
At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

1.  Demonstrate proper safety measures to protect the patient.
2.  Adjust the dental chair and the operating stools to the correct
   position.
3.  Adjust the dental light for maximum visibility.
4.  Identify rotary instruments and attachments by number, type, grit,
   shape, and describe their functions.
5.  Insert attachments and rotary instruments into high speed and low
   speed dental handpieces.
6.  Seat patients correctly for any dental procedure.
7.  Dismiss patients in a safe and correct manner.
8.  Utilize the concepts of Four-Handed and Six-Handed Dentistry.
9.  Give patients proper pre- and post-operative instructions.
10. Place a rubber dam in any quadrant of a manniquin.
11. Place a rubber dam on the anterior area of a fellow classmate.
12. Identify and explain the use of all dental hand instruments.
13. Demonstrate the basic instrument grasps.
14. Obtain and record a patient medical history.
15. Utilize the proper fulcrum when using instruments in the oral cavity.
16. Assist with any operative dental procedure.
17. Demonstrate proper placement and removal of equipment barriers.
18. Demonstrate the proper disinfection protocol following patient
   treatment.
