The second in a series of theory courses to prepare students to practice vocational nursing. Orems Self Care Deficit Theory is used as a framework for the study of medical surgical conditions and pharmacology with a focus on care of the pre/postoperative client. This course continues to compare and contrast nursing care systems in a variety of body systems. Acute and chronic care is compared between pediatric and adult clients with the major emphasis on care of the pre/postoperative client.

Second course in the part-time vocational nursing program. Covers the pre/postoperative care of patients with a variety of medical-surgical problems using nursing process and Orem's Theory as a guide. Continued complexity of conditions and pathological states with a variety of adult and pediatric scenarios are studied in case format of the theory class.

At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

Students will:
1. Continue to apply concepts learned in prerequisite theory course to
begin to analyze patients with more complex disease states.
2. Begin to apply Orem's Self-Care Deficit Theory to increasingly more
complex hypothetical scenarios over the course of the semester.
3. Apply basic growth and development concepts to nursing systems.
4. Collaborate with other nursing students in solving problems related to
hypothetical clinical scenarios.
5. Begin to analyze the effects of pathological processes on multiple body
systems.
6. Describe common clinical syndromes encountered in adults and children
(including typical nursing, medical and allied health care and drugs) for:
a. Pre/postoperative care: Includes assessment & intervention for pain
b. Urologic disorders
c. Reproductive and sexual disorders
d. Circulatory disorders
e. Respiratory disorders
f. Cardiovascular disorders
g. Gastrointestinal disorders
h. Immunity disorders
i. Endocrine disorders
j. Neuromuscular disorders
k. Integumentary disorders (communicable skin conditions)
l. Intravenous therapy and blood transfusions.

2. Autonomic pharmacology.
3. Care of children with congenital cardiac anomalies and infections
affecting the heart.
4. Care of patients undergoing cardiac diagnostics.
5. Care of children and adults with urologic disorders and common drug
therapies and treatments.
6. Assessment and Interventions related to Pain.
7. Care of adults and children with anemias.
8. Intravenous therapy and blood transfusion monitoring.
9. Care of childhood pediatric respiratory conditions i.e. cystic fibrosis
10. Care of adults undergoing invasive respiratory diagnostics chest
injuries, chest tubes, and respiratory failure.
11. Care of adults and children undergoing surgery involving the GI tract.
12. Study of immunity/autoimmunity and how it relates to serums & vaccines
13. Women's urogenital health prevention and diagnostics and common pre &
postoperative care of surgical gynecologic conditions.
14. Men's urogenital health, disease prevention, medical and surgical
treatment of common disorders.
15.Care of common endocrine disorders of adults and children related to
thyroid, parathyroid and adrenals.
16. Juvenile diabetes care.
17. Neurological impairments from congenital and traumatic insults with
implications for long term care of pediatric clients.
18. Acid-Base Balance and Blood Transfusion protocol.
19. Skin conditions with an emphasis on communicable pediatric conditions.
20. Ethical dilemmas of med-surg related to adult and pediatric cases.
Assignments:
