Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:
1. Identify and compare the various disciplines included in the
biological sciences.
2. Identify the course of study required for a major in biology or
physiology.
3. Summarize and evaluate lectures on current topics in biological
sciences.

a. Science education
b. Biology sub-disciplines: e.g. botany, zoology, molecular biology,
anatomy, physiology, microbiology, genetics, evolution, ecology,
embryology
c. The biology and physiology majors at SRJC
2. Current topics in Biology
There will be unique topics every semester, some possible topics might
include:
a. Natural history of specific geographical locations, e.g.
Madagascar, Galapagos
b. Biology of specific species, e.g. bats, manta rays, oaks, giardia
c. Current advances in medical research, e.g. impact of human genome
studies
d. Biology in the news, e.g. current Nobel prizes in physiology
e. Research in specific biological disciplines, e.g. prions and mad
cow disease, physiology of chemical dependency, sudden oak death

1. Attendance at lectures, 5 per semester.
2. Brief written report(s) may be required summarizing and evaluating the
material presented in one or more lectures.
3. Objective examination on orientation to biological sciences.
