COURSE CONTENT

Outcomes and Objectives:
At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

  The students will be able to:
     1. Define key terms relating to physical, phychosocial, and
        cognitive development of the school age child.
     2. Discuss normal developmental expectations of the school
        age child.
     3. Describe the influence of family and peers on the school
        age child.
     4. Formulate appropriate strategies for adults working with
        this age group.
     5. Evaluate classroom learning situations to assess
        developmental appropriatness for school age children.
     6. Construct moral development in the school age child.
     7. Relate information from class discussions and text to
        their own experiences.

Topics and Scope

 2.  Cognitive and memory development.
 3.  Social and moral development.
 4.  Emotional and sexual development.
 5.  Current issues and concerns of this age group.
 6.  The influence of family and peers to the school age child.
 7.  The role of adults in supporting optimal growth and development.
 8.  Developmentally appropriate practice in classroom and
     programs that serve the school age child.

Assignments:

  1.  Complete study questions on handouts, text, and class
     discussions.
 2.  Complete various reaction essays to films, speakers, and
     hypothetical situations, and current research.
 3.  Complete and document eight hours of participation with the
     school age child in a group situation.
 4.  Answer in essay format, select questions on eight hours of
     participating experience with a school age child.
 5.  Complete an observation using Piagetian tasks.
 6.  Reading of the assigned texts and handouts and be prepared
     to discuss in class.
