The exploration and use of various creative techniques in the production of photo-based imagery.  Both black and white and color, including the use of non-traditional materials, will be utilized to explore symbolsim, abstract images, controls and experimental techniques.

Prerequisites/Corequisites:
Art 36.


Recommended Preparation:
Art 37. Thorough knowledge of photographic equipment, materials and tech- niques.

COURSE CONTENT

Outcomes and Objectives:
At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

1.  Students will broaden their creative abilities by being made aware of
a wide range orf materials and techniques which can be used to produce
photo images.
2.  By individual exploration, working under guidance of an instructor,
students will strengthen their technical knowledge of a broad range of
techniques and processes available to the individual today.
3.  Working with knowledge gained, students will produce a wide variety of
photo imagery during the course of the semester.

Topics and Scope

1.  Exposure, development and printing - a review.
2.  Photo sensitive materials and their uses, including high contrast,non-
traditional materials, non-photographic light sensitive materials, color
photographic processes.
3.  Creative approaches to the image-abstract and literal subject matter.
4.  Creative camera techniques, lenses, filters, zooming, blur, various
films.
5.  Creative darkroom techniques, bas relief, high contrast, the Sabbatin
effect, multi-image printing, multiple exposures, "found imagery", texture
screens, photo sculpture, computer graphics, color materials.

Assignments:

Weekly assignments, utilizing techniques and materials discussed and
demonstrated in class, as well as a portfolio at the conclusion of the
semester, reflecting use of these techniques and materials.
