COURSE CONTENT

Outcomes and Objectives:
At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

Identify areas of garment construction which effectively relate to the
serger.
Build speed in garment construction using the serger.
Identify and apply the correct decorative serger threads and yarns
appropriate for a variety of projects both wearable and nonwearable.
Demonstrate proficient knowledge and skill in using a serger by
constructing 10 samples, 4 garments and 2 items for the home using
techniques learned.

Topics and Scope

Garment and/or project consturction:  Define areas where serger should
be used; management of order of contructin; build speed in construction.
Decorative serger techniques:  Threads and yarns suitable for various
techniques, fabrics and uses; applyikng the rolled edge technique to
a garment or project; applying the flatlock technique to a garment or
project.
New skills:  using fusible thread on the serber; making and applying braid
inserting an exposed zipper; decorative facings turned to the right side;
serger twists; tuck and roll edge; inserting serger cording; patchwork
flatlock; faux lock (framed stitch); decorative jacket/lining construction

Assignments:

1 garment using 4 thread and woven fabric.
1 garment using rolled edge.
1 garment using flatlock stutch.
1 garment of students choice to be different from others.
Construct 2 items for the home.
