ÿClinical experience in hospital and community psychiatric treatment settings. Application of principles and concepts of psychiatric theory in planning, implementation and evaluation; role-playing, process recordings, case studies, group discussion, knowledge of and administration of psychotropic and other medications.

Application of principles of nursing care for mentally disordered adolescents & adults with psychiatric diagnoses in hospitals, community & private psychiatric settings & chemical dependency treatment centers. Focus is on planning, implementation & evaluation of PT care including management of assaultive behavior, medication administeration, documentation, activities of daily living & therapeutic interventions. Anatomical, physio. & psychosocial concepts are applied throughout the course.

COURSE CONTENT

Outcomes and Objectives:
At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

The students will:
1.  Describe the legal rights of patients and act in an ethical manner
   that will communicate appreciation, respect and protection for
   these rights.
2.  Describe the dynamics and behavioral manifestations of assigned
   patients with psychiatric disorders.
3.  Participate with other nursing team members in making observations
   of the patient.
4.  Based upon the observations of the patient, participate with other
   team members in developing a psychiatric treatment program.
5.  Implement the treatment program.
6.  Evaluate the effectiveness of the treatment program.
7.  Describe the various psychiatric treatment modalities and apply this
   knowledge when working with patients.
8.  Describe elements necessary for a therapeutic ward milieu and
   participate with other team members to build and maintain this
   milieu.
9.  Describe the characteristic therapeutic effects and adverse effects
   of the psychotropic drugs and safely prepare, administer, and chart
   psychotropic medication according to specific hospital policy.
10. Accurately and objectively report and record observations of patient
   behavior and progress.
11. Demonstrate assertiveness and professionalism with patients and
   nursing team members.
12. Identify stressors affecting his/her personal and professional life.
13. Demonstrate an ability to utilize coping skills effectively.
14. Demonstrate professional and self-growth in the clinical setting.

Topics and Scope

1.  Professional ethics, legal issues, commitment procedures.
2.  Overview of mental health and history of psychiatry.
3.  Communication theory, interpersonal and therapeutic communication.
4.  The therapeutic relationship, nursing process and documentation.
5.  Developing and implementing psychiatric nursing care plans.
6.  Mental status assessment, observation, reporting and recording.
7.  Psychopharmacology - administration of psychotropic medications.
8.  Psychiatric disorders.
9.  Treatment modalities.

Assignments:

1.  Reading assignments in preparation for each clinical day (from
   required text and library, 40-50 pages per week).
2.  Research and compile one written case study on assigned patient.
3.  Required reading of specific supplemental material (discuss in
   clinical conferences).
4.  Write ten process recordings on assigned 1:1 nursing interventions.
5.  Skills lab (practice administering meds and various psychiatric
   treatment interventions at least 2 hrs/week).
6.  Produce nine behavioral notes per week for approximately eight weeks.
7.  Perform specific designated therapeutic intervention as demonstrated
   in skills lab.
