Outcomes and Objectives:
At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. Analyze problems and solutions related to the therapeutic riding
setting.
2. Identify and practice skills needed in the subject area.
3. Demonstrate new and innovative techniques and information in the
subject areas.
4. Demonstrate and articulate the roles and tasks of persons assisting in
a therapeutic riding melieu.
5. Demonstrate procedures for assisting a rider with ground and mounted
activities.
6. Evaluate a horse for use in a therapeutic riding program.
7. List components of a conditioning and training program for a
therapeutic riding horse.
8. Demonstrate safe horse handling skills.
9. Describe proper saddle and equipment fit to horse and rider.
10. Identify components of a horse health maintenance record keeping
system.
11. Discuss ethical considerations in the use of horses used in a
therapeutic riding program.
12. Demonstrate proficiency in lunging and ground driving skills.
Topics and Scope

2. Safety principles and emergency procedures when necessary.
3. Signs of stress, fatigue, etc. in the horse and/or rider.
4. Riding lesson plans.
5. Adaptive and other types of equipment.
6. Basic horsemanship skills to include: catching, leading, tying,
grooming, tacking, and warm-up.
7. Interpersonal and coaching skills which presents information
to the disabled students, peers, and other staff in a clear and
respectful manner.
8. Selection and management of the therapy horse.
9. Student ground handling skills, control, and safety concerns.
10. Tack selection, fitting, design and precautions for use
with horses.
11. Documentation procedures for the health, training, use of horses.
12. Ethical considerations involved in the use of horses.
