Description:

The Phlebotomy Skills Certificate provides an introduction to the fundamental clinical methods and practices of phlebotomy, including basic hematology, venipuncture techniques, routine processing, safety and infection control procedures, and quality assurance issues for health care providers. The certificate includes an 80-hour externship in an acute care setting.

Effective April 9, 2003, all persons performing phlebotomy who are not licensed professionals such as medical doctors, nurses, or clinical lab scientist, must be certified by the state of California before they are allowed to perform venipunctures. This certificate fulfills the 40 hours of phlebotomy class training and the 40 hours of phlebotomy practice, ,that includes at least 50 venipunctures and 10 skin punctures required for the California State Phlebotomy Certificate. In addition, all students are required to take the National Phlebotomy Exam which is approved by the State. This then allows students eligibility to obtain the California State Phlebotomy Certificate.

Phlebotomists are specialized medical laboratory assistants who work under the supervision of clinical lab scientists, lab manager and the Medical Director. They play an important role on the clinical lab team and in the healthcare organization. Their essential job duties include performing venipunctures on patients in an outpatient care setting and/or acute care setting. The specimens obtained from the patients are then analyzed and results of which provide valuable information for diagnosis. The phlebotomists must ensure that blood is taken correctly, stored and transported properly and processed in accordance to established protocol. If the specimens are harmed during or after the collection process, test results will be inaccurate and therefore, would delay the prognosis of the patients.

Please see the Phlebotomy Web site for more detailed information.
