Description:
The Emergency Medical Technician (EMT Basic) Skills Certificate provides technical and practical knowledge and skills to meet the requirements of the California Administrative Code to gain certification as an Emergency Medical Technician Basic by the California State Emergency Medical Services Authority. Students will learn to apply principles of anatomy, physiology, and communication as they relate to the assessment of the sick and injured and rendering pre-hospital basic life support. Individuals wishing to enter the Emergency Medical Technician field will be certified after completion of this program. Every two years EMT's are required to complete the Emergency Medical Technician Refresher certificate program. Students must be 18 years of age by course completion to become certified.
Continued growth in employment of EMT’s is expected primarily because of the rapidly expanding aging population. Many fire service and law enforcement positions list an Emergency Medical Technician Certificate as “required” or “preferred” for employment.
Those who wish to continue their education and broaden employment opportunities can continue with the Emergency Medical Technician/Paramedic Certificate of Achievement.
Certification Note:
Some public safety positions have legal requirements and background qualifications.
Upon successful completion of this program, the student will be able to:
- Complete the National Registry written exam;
- Complete the National Registry Skills Exam; and
- Demonstrate professional behavior consistent with criteria for employment as a certified Emergency Medical Technician-Basic.
