Description:
The Horticultural Therapy Practices Competency Certificate provides students with the background, skills, and experience that will allow them to incorporate horticultural therapy into an existing job environment or equip them for further horticultural therapy coursework. The program of courses focuses primarily on techniques, methods, and structures used in horticultural therapy with a diversity of populations in a variety of settings.
The program includes information concerning treatment alternatives that would be appropriate for a wide range of therapy professionals, educators, students enrolled in SRJC Horticulture and/or Human Services certificate programs, and interested individuals.
The Horticultural Therapy Practices Competency Certificate is one rung in a career ladder. Students interested in pursuing further coursework may wish to review information regarding first level registration as a horticultural therapist assistant or obtain information about university level horticultural therapy programs, American Horticultural Therapy Association (AHTA) accredited certificate programs, and internship opportunities through the AHTA http://www.ahta.org/.
Horticultural Therapy uses horticulture, nature, and plant-related activities to assist in the therapy and/or rehabilitation of people with special needs. With increasing interest in using plants to provide healing, social, and therapeutic benefits to people, there is a growing need for individuals trained both in horticulture and the therapeutic use of plants.
Men and women who work in the horticultural therapy field find that job opportunities are plentiful in the United States and internationally. The following list (adapted from Kansas State University's Horticultural Therapy website) is representative of horticultural therapy employment sites: arboreta and botanic gardens, community gardens, community mental health centers, corporate gardens, correctional facilities, cooperatiave extensive services, city parks and recreation departments, extended childcare facilities, farmers markets, horticultural industries, medical hospitals, Peace Corps and international agencies, physical rehabilitation medical centers, psychiatric hospitals, public school gardening programs, retirement communities, substance abuse programs, special education schools, V.A. medical centers, and zoo horticulture departments.
