Catalog Description:

Course presents theoretical basis for care of mentally disordered adolescents and adults. Emphasis is on planning for implementation of care in hospital, community psychiatric settings, and chemical dependency facilities. Pharmacology and application of psychological, psychosocial and interpersonal concepts are integrated throughout the course.

COURSE CONTENT

Outcomes and Objectives:
At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

The students will:

1.  Describe the role and function of the psychiatric techician as well

   as the role and function of other members of the treatment team.

2.  Describe identified standards for health care professionals.

3.  State the legal rights of patients and the critieria for the various

   involuntary commitment procedures.

4.  Describe the elements of communication and the communication

   techniques that will develop and maintain a therapeutic relationship

   with patients.

5.  State the major, significant elements that distinguish a mentally

   healthy person from a mentally ill person.

6.  Recognize and describe the dynamics and behavioral manifestations

   of patients with psychiatric disorders.

7.  Describe principles of observation in any patient contact, through

   consideration of what is seen and heard to identify emotional,

   physical, spiritual, intellectual and psychosocial needs of the

   patient.

8.  Describe guidelines and principals of documentation in reference to

   behavioral charting.

9.  Develop written treatment plans, utilizing appropriate assessment

   criteria and measurable behavioral objectives.

10. Describe elements necessary to maintain a therapeutic ward milieu.

11. Describe various psychiatric and rehabilitative treatment modalities.

12. Describe the characteristics, therapeutic and adverse effects of

   the commonly used psychotropic medications.

13. Develop an awareness of self which will enable the student to

   recognize stressors affecting their personal and professional life

   and demonstrate an ability to utilize coping skills effectively.

14. Recognize the importance of further professional and self growth.

Topics and Scope

1.  Professional ethics, legal issues, commitment procedures.

2.  Overview of mental health and of psychiatry.

3.  Communication theory, interpersonal and therapeutic communication.

4.  The therapeutic relationship, nursing process and documentation.

5.  Developing psychiatric nursing care plans.

6.  Mental status assessment, observation, reporting and recording.

7.  Psychopharmacology, psychotropic medications.

8.  Psychiatric disorders.

9.  Treatment modalities.

Assignments:

1.  Reading assignments in preparation for each lecture from required

   texts and library. 40-50 pages per week.

2.  Required viewing of films and audio-visual media related to specific

   content, approximately one per week, completion of study questions

   on each film.

3.  Required reading of supplemental book and reaction paper on that

   book.
