At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:
1. Describe risks involved in the exposure to hazardous drugs.
2. Describe proper handling and storage techniques for hazardous drugs.
3. Demonstrate competency in all applicable State Board training requirements for the safe handling of chemotherapy and hazardous drugs based on the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists DVD/Workbook: Safe Handling of Hazardous Drugs Video Training Program.

I.   Introduction to Chemotherapy:
      A. What are hazardous drugs
      B. American Society of Health System Pharmacists (ASHP) and other entities
      C. Receipt, storage, labeling and transport  
II.  Risk Assessment, Controls and Medical Surveillance and Equipment:
      A. Biological safety cabinets
      B. Isolators
      C. Personal protective equipment
      D. Decontamination, waste disposal and spill control
III. Aseptic Training and Technique Validations:
      A. Aseptic hand washing and garbing
      B. Decontamination and deactivation of a Biological Safety Cabinet (BSC)
      C. Hazardous liquid vial manipulations
      D. Hazardous powder vial manipulations
      E. Hazardous ampule manipulations     
IV. Chemotherapy and Hazardous Agents:
      A. Safety issues
      B. Use of chemo spill kit
      C. Safety equipment
      D. Correct selection of equipment
      E. Labeling and packaging of chemotherapy preparations
