Catalog Description:

Provides fire and emergency services personnel a variety of instructional methods and techniques relative to cognitive training using the latest concepts of career-technical education and to select, develop, organize, and utilize instructional material appropriate for teaching technical fire technology lessons.  Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be awarded a Training Instructor 1A certificate from the State Fire Marshal's office.

Course Completion of FIRE 71 or equivalent

Eligibility for ENGL 100 or ESL 100 and Course Completion of FIRE 208.1 or equivalent

At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

1.  Identify the training methods and techniques used in the latest concepts in career-technical education.

2.  Select, adapt, organize and utilize instructional materials appropriate for teaching cognitive lessons.

3.  Describe the criteria and methods used to evaluate teaching and learning efficiency.

4.  Demonstrate the major learning principles through teaching demonstrations.

Topics and Scope

 1.  Orientation

 2.  Instructional methodology, adaption, and delivery

      a.  Fire and emergency services instruction as it relates to cognitive training

      b.  Principles of learning

      c.  Defining levels of instruction

      d.  Components of learning objectives

      e.  Employing the four-step method as it relates to cognitive training

      f.  Assembling and reviewing instructional materials as they relate to cognitive training

      g.  Adapting cognitive lesson materials

      h.  Legal and ethical considerations as they relate to cognitive training

      i.  Methods of instructional delivery

      j.  Presentation techniques for cognitive training

      k.  Selecting and using audiovisual training aids and devices

      l.  Effective interpersonal communications

      n.  Procedures used for evaluating student instructor teaching demonstrations

Assignments:

     1. Read 20-40 pages prior to each class session

     2. Assemble, review and adapt instructional lesson materials

     3. Preparation of a cognitive lesson plan

     4. Perform cognitive teaching demonstrations

     5. Evaluation of cognitive teaching demonstrations assignment

     6. Evaluate cognitive teaching demonstrations

     7. Perform sample summative test

     8. Study for state exam

     9. State exam

Methods of Evaluation/Basis of Grade.

Writing: Assessment tools that demonstrate writing skill and/or require students to select, organize and explain ideas in writing.		Writing 0 - 10%
Lesson plans
This is a degree applicable course but assessment tools based on writing are not included because skill demonstrations are more appropriate for this course.
Problem solving: Assessment tools, other than exams, that demonstrate competence in computational or non-computational problem solving skills.		Problem Solving 0 - 10%
Adaptive cognitive lesson materials
Skill Demonstrations: All skill-based and physical demonstrations used for assessment purposes including skill performance exams.		Skill Demonstrations 30 - 40%
Teaching demonstrations
Exams: All forms of formal testing, other than skill performance exams.		Exams 40 - 50%
State exam
