COURSE CONTENT

Outcomes and Objectives:
At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:
1.  Evaluate patterns, fabrics, linings, and interfacing and select compatible coordinates.
2.  Recognize and classify tailoring techniques that are unique to menswear.
3.  Apply these techniques to a garment.
4.  Construct a custom-tailored man's jacket or coat.
5.  Based on subsequent repeats, students will be able to apply techniques to:
       a. increasingly complex applications
       b. increasingly complex patterns
       c. fabric manipulation with a variety of fabric textures
       d. increasingly complex fitting issues and adjustments
       e. gain confidence and speed

Topics and Scope

1.  Pattern selection and appropriate fabrics for a variety of styles
2.  Body measurements and pattern alterations
3.  Making a muslin fitting shell
4.  Different interfacings, the suitability to pattern and fabric and the methods of application
5.  Different linings and their characteristics
6.  Construction techniques:
   a. Applying interfacings, shoulder plates, and other special interfacings
   b. Welt pockets with flaps
   c. Patch pockets
   d. Making shoulder pads and inserting them
   e. Back vents
   f.  Order of assembly of jacket
   g. Lapels and collar and undercollar
   h. Sleeves, sleeve heads, and plackets
   i.   Insertion of lining
   j.   Hems
   k. Buttons, shank, and buttonholes
7. Repeating students will be presented with increasingly complex construction techniques.

Assignments:

2.  Construct a jacket or coat
3.  Make samples of construction techniques
4.  1 Mid-Term and Final Exam
5.  Read 10-15 pages per week from text
6.  Repeating students will be expected to perform increasingly complex construction techniques.
