COURSE CONTENT

Student Learning Outcomes:
At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

1. Identify and select appropriate fabrics for clothing, home furnishings, and accessories.

2. Understand and compare sustainable fiber manufacturing processes with conventional systems.

3. Recognize the government regulations pertaining to the textile industry.

 

Objectives:

At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

1. Define basic terminology used in the textile industry.

2. Recognize practices that consumers utilize in selecting, using, and caring for textile products.

3. Describe the characteristics and manufacturing processes for natural, human-made, synthetic, and sustainable fibers.

4. Compare the properties of various types of yarns used to produce fabrics.

5. Compare the basic characteristics of fabrics made by knitting, weaving, and felting and recognize finishes applied to increase usefulness and to alter appearance.

6. Understand the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) role pertaining to the sale and use of textile products.

7. Explain the purpose of products used in laundering operations and their effect on the environment.
