COURSE CONTENT

Outcomes and Objectives:
At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

The students will:

1.  Be able to tell a story before an audience.

2.  Identify story genres including myth, legend,

   folktale, fairy tale, and others.

3.  Master the techniques for finding a story appropriate to

   tell.

4.  Review stories from cultures other than one's own.

5.  Develop effective techniques for storytelling.

6.  Increase repetoire of stories commonly told.

7.  Select appropriate stories,

   taking into consideration developmental tasks,

   emotional needs, and story content.

Topics and Scope

  1.  How to select a story suitable for telling

        a. characteristics of a tellable tale

        b. guidelines for adapting a story to tell

        c. sources of stories

        d. guidelines for selecting the right story for a

           particular age group

 2.  Learning a story

 3.  Storytelling with props

 4.  Participation stories

 5.  Presenting the prepared story

        a. setting

        b. timing

Assignments:

  1.  Find, learn, and tell two stories, one of which must be

     appropriate for children between 4 years and 8 years.

 2.  Listen and report on 3 audiocassettes storytelling.

 3.  Tell a story each week to a group outside of class.

 4.  Complete an annotated bibliography of 15 stories suitable

     for telling.

 5.  Listen to and evaluate other student storystellers.
