Skills and techniques required for newspaper or magazine photography, including instruction in the basic skills of camera operation, film and print operation, film and print processing and photographic techniques. Includes photojournalism history, news values, equipment use, layouts and reproduction, ethics, legal problems and other matters of concern in photojournalism. A number of projects, including a major picture story, will be undertaken.

COURSE CONTENT

Outcomes and Objectives:
At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

1.  Students will gain an appreciation and understanding of the basic
photographic techniques, including camera usage, exposure, and both film
and print processing.
2.  Photographing a series of assigments in both black and white and color
The student will acquire knowledge of the special photographic situations
and conditions that apply to photojournalistic applications of the medium.
3.  By handling assignments, with deadline considerations for campus
publications, individuals will experience the working problems of a
photojournalist.
4.  Students will gain background knowledge about the use of photographs
in publications.

2.  Basic darkroom technique.
3.  History of photojournalism.
4.  News photographs.
5.  Feature photographs, sports, photography.
6.  Photo sequences and special techniques.
7.  The elements of a picture story.
8.  Photo editing and usage.
9.  Specialized photo equipment.
10. Ethics and the law.

Assignments:

Weekly photo assignments in either black and white or color will duplicate
the type of photo projects one would encounter in working photojournalism.
Also, students will photograph assignments for campus publications and
complete a major picture story before the conclusion of the semester as
their final project.
