This course provides eight hours a week of experience as a Community Health Worker for students to practice skills learned in CHW 52B.  Another hour each week will be spent with instructor/supervisor, discussing community organization, assessment, outreach skills, and appropriate client referrals.  Community work assignments will demonstrate basic knowledge of vulnerable populations' health issues, communicable diseases, nutrition, heart disease and violence prevention. To get credit for professional experience for this class, students must send job description and letter of recommendation from their supervisor verifying that they have worked successfully for at least one year full time as a CHW.

Outcomes and Objectives:
At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

By the completion of this course, the student will be able to:
1.  Deomonstrate, with community experience assignments, the ability to
   refer clients to aid programs for which they qualify.
2.  Apply community organization, assessment, and outreach skills.
3.  Practice cultural awareness skills in the work setting.
4.  Demonstrate and ass new basic knowledge of vulnerable populations'
   health issues, communicable diseases, nutrition, heart disease and
   violence through work experience assignments.
5.  Apply program planning skills in the work setting.
6.  Practice self-care techniques.

Topics and Scope

I.   Students will complete eight hours of work experience each week:
    a.  Working in a Community Health Worker position in an assigned
        agency or clinic.
    b.  Students also complete one hour of seminar per week with their
        Work Experience I instructor/supervisor.
II.  Student assignments will include application of community
    orgainzation assessment, and outreach skills, practice of cultural
    awareness skills, experience with vulnerable populations' health
    issues, communicable diseases, and health promotion.
III. Fieldwork learning objectives and assignments related to the skills
    learned in CHW 52B will be reviewed and further discussed during the
    one-hour seminars.
IV.  The instructor will meeting with one-half of the students every
    other week, encouraging supportive problem solving and decision
    making by the students to deal with their work experience
    challenges.  Working wth vulnerable populations, communicating
    witih health teams and clients, role modeling health behaviors,
    managing time and stress and promoting health.

Example:
Based on the classroom presentation on community organization and
outreach, respon in two to three pages to this situation:
Your agency is planning a community health promotion event (public
meeting, health fair booth, or other).
1.  Identify three imprtant health promotion messages to give.
2.  Design a work plan for organizing the event, listing activities step
   by step, with names of health team members who will be doing the
   activity and the date the activity should be completed.
3.  Design a flyer and a publicity plan that will make people in your
   community want to come to your event.  Include who, what, where, when
   and where to call for further information.
